Week 7: Create a wiki

Wikis have become a very useful device in the Internet to develop nets of collaborative work, especially for educational purposes. Wikis are fairly easy to create, edit and use. Moreover, they allow people who cannot meet to put all their work in common in one single site and upload materials periodically to keep it up-to-date.

Log in http://pbworks.com/, register and start designing it either individually or in groups.

First, think of the topic you want your wiki to be about. Then, decide the contents you want to include.
Organise them into pages to make a coherent, straightforward structure. Select the pictures, videos or material according to whom the wiki is addressed to.

Use the making of ours as a guidance:

We chose to create a wiki devoted to listening activities for children.

One of the sections recommends a number of pages where this aspect can be practiced and discusses them critically. The user can have a look at them and enter that or those which s/he thinks is/are going to help him/her best to improve his/her English.

Another section is for videos for children with funny songs to familiarise them with the English language in an amusing way.

In case the users were a bit older, we wanted to include other videos for teenagers.

The fourth page is a collection of fairy tales for children. These are widely known stories which they might have heard of in their L1. By encouraging students to remember them, new vocabulary and grammatical structures can be taught in a funnier way.

We suggest you to create a voki too at this page. This is an appealing application to children that you can use to implement your online lessons. You can see an example of voki on the right at the top of this blog.

Now, create your personal wiki and invite your friends!
